Employers are prohibited from discriminating against employees on the basis of their religion. This means employers cannot treat employees worse, or better, because of their religion when making decisions regarding hiring, firing, promotions, desirable or undesirable job assignments, layoffs, pay, benefits, or requests for time off. It also means employees have the right to work in an environment free of religious-based harassment, such as frequent teasing, taunting, threats or insults that target an employee because of his or her religion.
While the law protects employees from unequal treatment by their employer because of their religion, it can sometimes require employers to provide reasonable accommodations required by an employee’s religion, such as granting an exception to a workplace dress code or working around an employee’s religious observation needs when deciding employee work schedules.
